California has already contributed to the history of art in America but she is destined to add far more brilliant pages, not in individual effort, but in the great number of artist who will take part in making here a culture which is not yet imagined.” – Maurice Braun, notable San Diego Painter (1928)

Continuing the region’s legacy of celebrating San Diego’s vibrant arts community, The Studio Door will once again showcase the region’s visual artists through local exhibitions, online gallery and a national publication under the 50 TO WATCH banner.

APPLY TODAY >>> Call for artists is NOW open on CaFÉ.  Click here to see prospectus.

  • Call for artists deadline:     Wednesday, January 31 – 10:30 pm
  • Juror:                                 Maria Mingalone, Executive Director of Oceanside Museum of Art
  • Prospectus:                        https://www.callforentry.org/festivals_unique_info.php?ID=4886
  • Exhibitions:                        Exhibition split between The Studio Door & Escondido Arts Partnership
  • Printed Publication:            Professionally produced artist catalog mailed to over 1,000 galleries nationally

Artists can apply online through CaFÉ.  They should showcase 5 – 10 pieces that represent their body of work. Initially, each artist pays a flat rate of $25 when entering on CaFÉ.

50 To Watch is designed as a co-op opportunity. Participating artists, that are juried in, will share in the production costs of the publication and its mailing.  An additional payment of $350 will cover those costs.   All of these funds are used for the publication designer, full press printing and distribution to galleries across the country.  Each artist receives a two-page spread.  Extra pages and covers will are also available for an additional cost.

The total cost of $375 is less than the cost of an ad in local publications that run once.  The value in 50 To Watch is that this publication is mailed to a targeted list of galleries and becomes an incredibly useful marketing tool with a shelf life of two years plus.  Local gallery owners and art shops tell me that they still use the past two additions to reach out to local artists.
